UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1999 the part of Graz described as the “old city” – Altstadt – was added to a list of 900 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This recognition helps Graz honour and preserve its heritage. The core of maintenance and preservation of any UNESCO World Heritage site is found in its Management Plan. The plan is based on historical research and supported by Austrian Federal law and Styrian state law. Following several years of lobbying UNESCO, the Graz World Heritage site was – in 2010 – extended to include an area around the Schloss Eggenberg.
