Schlossberg Elevator

Access the Schlossberg elevator from the Schlossbergplatz. In 2000 a vertical elevator shaft, seven metres in diameter and 77 metres tall was driven through the rock from the level of the city to the base of the Uhrturm. The elevator hoists two passenger cabins of 15 people up to the Schlossberg.

One tunnel passage leads from Schlossbergplatz to the “Dom im Berg” – a huge cavern used for indoor venues – over to the Karmeliterplatz. During World War II six kilometers of interconnecting underground tunnels were built by forced labourers and Prisoners of War. The tunnels offered protection from air raids for 40,000 people.
