Ring Road

When a defensible southern city wall was no longer required toward the 19th century, the area held by moat and glacis was subsituted by a line of four-storey buildings in late classic and early historic style. Former bastions, can be seen protruding from these lines.

At the end of the Burggasse there used to be another gate into the city, the “Franzens Thor.” During planning and construction of the Opernring belt way (by state engineer Ritter von Kink), the gate was removed and replaced by lawn, rose borders and a fountain.
