Island in the Mur
In preparation for the 2003 Capital of Culture festival, a temporary floating island north of the Erich-Edegger-Steg was installed. The island’s 450-ton steel tube construction, tethered by two foot bridges, is floating on the river Mur. The island – a ship really – was designed by New York artist Vito Acconci.
Its organic form, composed of a number of merging shell shapes, allows for a variety of open or closed spaces – depending on the use required – a café (realization by Acconci Studio and design by Grazer Architektenformation purpur), an amphitheater and a children’s playground. The shape invites to relax and stay, from here you can observe the city from a particular perspective.
