In 2000 a competition entry by London architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier was selected to revitalize and expand the Cast Iron House (dated 1848). The resulting ultra-modern “friendly alien” exhibition hall has since become a landmark of Graz. The shimmering blue “bubble with nozzle skylights” appears to float on a transparent base. The building features 11,100 square metres of floor space with exhibits of contemporary art, …

new media and photography, and houses a restaurant and a media lounge. The travelator, an inclined conveyor belt, lifts visitors onto the two exhibition floors. The outer skin – of acrylic panels and representing “big pixels” – emits visual and audio signals, to be seen and heard every day 10 minutes before the full hour from 08:50 to 21:50. Docked to “bubble” is the “needle” – a glass-enclosed observation deck with seating.
