Below the Bürgerbastei, on the southwest slope of the Schlossberg is the Herberstein garden. The Counts Herberstein used the slope as a vineyard, which they accessed directly from the Palais in the Sackstrasse – a dangerously steep and narrow, now disused,
path climbed from the Palais to the garden. In 1930 the Herberstein garden was made accessible via the new Kriegssteig and was opened to the public. Several levels of terraces – featuring Mediterranean vegetation – offer stunning views across the roofscape of Graz.
