Where bare glacis and moat fortifications of the 16th and 17th century once stood firm, the city’s park – Stadtpark – with many different native and exotic tree species now flourishes. Scattered throughout the park, among old growth avenues and spacious lawns, you will find sculptures of and monuments to people important to Graz.
The French bronze sculptor Antoine Durenne created the Franz-Josef-Fountain for the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna and it was afterwards purchased by the citizens of Graz. West of the fountain is the modernist Forum Stadtpark, an incubator of Graz scientists and artists, who have acquired the former Stadtpark-Cafe and turned it into an exhibition hall.
